5G in Egypt: spectrum, operators and what consumers need to know

Every Egyptian operator is licensed for 5G and all four hold new spectrum. What remains uncertain is deployment: where the capacity is switched on, and how fast.

This is a standing explainer on 5G in Egypt. It separates three things that are frequently confused: the right to operate 5G, the radio spectrum available to carry it, and the network actually built and switched on. The first two are documented. The third is where claims should be treated carefully.

How Egypt licensed 5G

Egypt licensed 5G in two phases. Telecom Egypt was licensed in January 2024 for a reported $150m. Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt and e& Egypt signed second-phase agreements on 7 October 2024, with 15-year licences reported at a combined $675m. A licence grants permission to deploy. It says nothing about how many sites are live, in which governorates, or at what performance.

What spectrum actually does

Spectrum is the raw material of mobile capacity. Lower frequencies travel further and penetrate buildings better; higher frequencies carry far more traffic over shorter distances. An operator's usable capacity in a given place is a function of how much spectrum it holds there, how many sites it has, and how much transmission capacity connects those sites back into the core network.

The February 2026 award released 410MHz across the four operators for roughly $3.5bn, the largest single release in the Egyptian market's history — covered in our report on the award. Because the blocks were distributed across all four operators rather than concentrated, the competitive structure of the market was left intact.

Why deployment lags licensing

Once spectrum and licences are in hand, the constraints move elsewhere. Each 5G site needs high-capacity backhaul, usually fibre; it needs reliable power, which in practice means grid connections and backup; and it needs to be economically justified by the traffic in its immediate area. None of those are regulatory problems, and none are solved by another announcement.

That is why new capacity appears first in dense urban demand — parts of Greater Cairo, Alexandria and the newer districts on the capital's eastern edge — where blocks can be added to masts that already exist. Extending the same service into Upper Egypt or along the Red Sea coast requires new sites and new transmission, spending measured in years.

What consumers can expect today

A 5G-capable handset and a compatible plan are necessary but not sufficient: the site serving a given location must also be carrying 5G. Users should therefore expect availability to vary street by street rather than city by city, and should treat operator marketing claims as claims about their own footprint rather than about the country.

It is also worth being clear about what 5G changes. For most consumers it raises capacity and reduces congestion at busy times more than it transforms headline speeds, and measured speed figures in Egypt vary widely by source and method — a problem examined in our analysis of Egypt's broadband speed figures.

The demand side

Egypt's mobile base passed 125 million subscriptions in the first quarter of 2026, with usage growing faster than the subscriber count, as tracked in our review of the quarterly indicators. That growth is the commercial case for the capacity operators have just bought.

Who decides what

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority licenses operators, allocates spectrum and enforces service rules; the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology sets policy. Our explainer on who regulates Egyptian telecoms sets out the division of responsibilities.

Common questions

Is 5G available across Egypt? No verified source supports a claim of nationwide availability. All four operators are licensed; deployment is uneven and expanding.

Does new spectrum mean faster speeds immediately? Not immediately. Spectrum raises the ceiling on capacity at sites where it is deployed and where backhaul supports it.

Will a 4G phone stop working? Nothing in Egypt's licensing or spectrum decisions announces a shutdown of existing networks.

What may change

Watch for verified site-count or coverage disclosures, licensing of bands currently only trialled, and independent measurement of network performance by governorate. Cairo Stream will update this page as those are confirmed.
