Egypt's $3.5bn spectrum award hands all four operators new capacity

Egypt's four licensed mobile operators have secured a combined 410MHz of additional spectrum in an award valued at roughly $3.5bn, the largest single release of mobile frequencies the Egyptian market has seen.

The award follows the national regulator's decision to bring long-reserved bands into commercial use rather than release them piecemeal. Distributing capacity across all four operators, rather than concentrating it in one or two, keeps the competitive structure of the market intact.

What operators actually bought

Spectrum is not coverage. Additional frequencies are most valuable where demand already exceeds what existing sites can carry: dense parts of Greater Cairo, Alexandria, and the growing residential districts on the capital's eastern edge. In those areas the new blocks can be added to masts that are already built, which is the fastest and cheapest way to raise throughput.

Outside the dense corridors, the economics are different. Converting spectrum into service quality in Upper Egypt or along the Red Sea coast requires new sites and new transmission, and that spending is measured over years rather than quarters.

The link to 5G

Three things will show whether the award is working: the pace of new site activation reported to the regulator, the trajectory of the mobile subscriber base and data usage per line, and whether measured network quality improves in the governorates that currently lag.
