5G coverage in Egypt: where it works and what users can expect

Egypt's four mobile operators now offer 5G services, but coverage is still expanding and varies by location. Here is what the operators and the regulator officially say about the rollout, what independent measurements show, and what users need to connect.

Egypt has moved from introducing 5G to expanding it. All four mobile operators — Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, e& Egypt and Telecom Egypt's WE — now offer 5G services, but the network is not yet a uniform nationwide layer. Availability depends on location, operator, device and network conditions.

For users, the practical question is no longer simply whether Egypt has 5G. It does. The more useful question is where you can actually connect to it.

Egypt's 5G rollout is still expanding

Egypt's 5G services entered the commercial market in 2025, after the four mobile operators were licensed and completed their technical preparations. The background to the licences and the spectrum behind them is set out in our reference guide to 5G and spectrum in Egypt.

The rollout has followed a gradual model rather than an instant nationwide switch-on. Orange Egypt launched 5G commercially in June 2025 and said its first phase would focus on selected high-traffic areas across the governorates, followed by gradual expansion.

WE's current 5G information similarly tells customers that the 5G network is expanding across Egypt to reach more areas, and that a compatible device inside a WE 5G coverage area is required. e& Egypt publishes 5G activation guidance for mobile customers and also sells 5G-based home wireless service through its eHome Wireless router bundles.

The result is a network that is increasingly available, but still dependent on where a user is standing.

Vodafone publishes the most detailed location list

Vodafone Egypt provides the clearest public breakdown of its current 5G footprint. Its network locations page states that Vodafone 5G has over 2,000 sites, connects all seven key regions, reaches 21 major cities and is available in more than 100 areas.

The published locations include parts of Cairo, Giza, the New Capital, Alexandria, the North Coast, Tanta, Banha, Suez, Zagazig, Mansoura, Beni Suef, Damanhour, Ain Sokhna, Dahab, Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, El Gouna, Ras Sidr, Luxor and Sohag.

Within Greater Cairo, Vodafone's list includes areas such as New Cairo, Nasr City, Maadi, Heliopolis, Mokattam, Shorouk, the New Capital and several central Cairo districts.

This does not mean every street or building inside those areas carries a continuous 5G signal. It means Vodafone identifies those locations as part of its current 5G footprint.

What the other operators say

Orange Egypt describes its 5G service as delivering higher speeds, lower latency and greater capacity than 4G, and advertises internet speed of up to 400 Mbps. Orange says customers need a 5G-capable device and a uSIM (4G) SIM card; customers still on older SIMs need to replace them. Orange's published guidance also says 5G coverage is expanding and does not claim availability in all areas today.

WE says 5G is already available in Egypt and that where a customer has a 5G-compatible device inside a WE 5G coverage area, 5G is activated automatically on an eligible line. If the device leaves a 5G coverage area, WE says it automatically switches to the best available network, such as 4G or 3G, to keep the connection running. WE also states that its 5G network is expanding across Egypt.

e& Egypt publishes instructions for switching a compatible handset to 5G and offers 5G through its eHome Wireless service, which uses a 5G router rather than a conventional smartphone connection. e& does not publish a public street-level list of its 5G locations, so for its mobile customers availability has to be checked against the operator's own current information for a specific place.

What independent measurements show

Official operator announcements are useful, but they are not the only way to see where mobile networks are actually being detected.

Cairo Stream also reviewed nPerf's Egypt mobile coverage maps, which show 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G measurements for Vodafone, Orange, e& and WE. nPerf's data is not an operator coverage map. It is crowdsourced: measurements are collected from users of the nPerf application in real-world conditions, the maps update automatically, and nPerf states that for coverage data it retains only tests with a maximum geolocation precision of 50 metres.

That makes nPerf a useful independent view of where 5G has been detected in practice, rather than a statement of commercial availability.

Why the distinction matters

A location appearing on an independent measurement map does not mean every customer there will get 5G. Signal availability varies with the exact position, building construction, network congestion, device compatibility, spectrum and network configuration, indoor versus outdoor conditions, and the particular operator in use.

Crowdsourced maps can also register technical testing as well as commercial service, so they are best treated as supplementary evidence rather than a substitute for an operator's official coverage information.

Cairo and the other major cities

nPerf maintains a dedicated 3G/4G/5G coverage map for Cairo and allows measurements to be filtered by operator, with separate views for cities including Alexandria, Giza, Port Said, Suez, Luxor, Mansoura, Tanta, Zagazig, Ismailia and Aswan. That is useful for checking recent real-world measurements before travelling or choosing a network — but a map is still not a guarantee that 5G appears everywhere inside a city.

What speeds can users expect?

This is where caution is needed. Operators advertise what the technology can do; actual speeds depend on conditions and location. Orange advertises internet speed of up to 400 Mbps on its 5G service, which is a maximum rather than a typical result.

The NTRA separately publishes regular measurements of mobile network quality. Its second-quarter 2026 report covered 129,000 kilometres of main and secondary roads across Egyptian cities and villages, as Cairo Stream reported in detail in its review of the regulator's drive tests.

Those measurements should not be read as 5G-only speed results. They are broader measurements of mobile voice and data service quality across all four networks, which means a network-quality figure cannot be used to describe the performance of any operator's 5G layer specifically.

What you need to use 5G in Egypt

There are three basic requirements. First, a 5G-compatible device: a 4G-only handset, tablet or router cannot connect to a 5G network. Second, a compatible SIM or eSIM — the exact requirement depends on the operator, and Orange, for instance, says an existing 4G uSIM works while older SIMs need replacing. Third, being inside the operator's 5G coverage area.

When 5G is unavailable, devices normally fall back to 4G or another available network. WE describes this automatic fallback explicitly for its customers.

Is 5G available everywhere in Egypt?

Not in the sense of uniform nationwide coverage. The four operators have launched 5G and continue to expand, but their own published information describes progressive rollout. Vodafone currently provides the most detailed public list of locations, while Orange, WE and e& describe ongoing expansion and availability inside covered areas.

For consumers, the practical approach is to check the operator's latest coverage information for the exact location where 5G is needed, and use independent tools such as nPerf for additional real-world context.

What happens when you leave 5G coverage

You do not normally lose mobile connectivity simply because 5G disappears. A compatible device moves back to 4G or another available network, and WE says its customers' devices switch automatically to the best available network on leaving a 5G area. For travellers and everyday users, that means 5G coverage does not have to be continuous for a mobile connection to remain useful.

Egypt is already looking beyond today's 5G

The next stage of Egypt's mobile-network development may involve more than adding 5G sites. In August 2026 the NTRA announced that Egypt had completed Africa's first trial of mobile services using the 6 GHz band, conducted with Telecom Egypt and Huawei, including a mobile base station operating in the band and a data call over it. The regulator said the trial reached approximately 1.7 Gbps per user and pointed to the band's potential to add capacity in high-traffic areas. Cairo Stream covered the upper 6 GHz trial when it was announced.

The trial does not mean commercial 6 GHz mobile service is available to consumers. It is an early test of technology and spectrum that could support future high-capacity networks.

The bottom line

Egypt's 5G rollout has moved beyond the launch stage. All four operators offer 5G services and coverage is expanding across major cities and other locations. But there is still a difference between 5G being commercially available somewhere in Egypt and reliable 5G at a specific street, building or destination.

The most reliable approach combines three pieces of information: the operator's official coverage information, independent real-world measurements, and your own device and SIM compatibility. That gives a far more realistic picture than any single nationwide coverage claim.

Egypt's 5G network is still being built out. The more interesting question now is not whether the country has 5G, but how quickly the coverage, capacity and quality of those networks improve.
