SEA-ME-WE-6 lands in Egypt, reinforcing a global transit chokepoint

Landings at Port Said and Ras Ghareb, completed and announced on 2 July 2025, added capacity to the corridor that carries a large share of Europe–Asia internet traffic.

The SEA-ME-WE-6 subsea cable system landed on both of Egypt's coasts, announced on 2 July 2025, at Port Said on the Mediterranean and Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea.

Egypt's geography makes it unavoidable for east–west subsea routing. Cables arriving from Europe terminate on the Mediterranean coast, cross the country on terrestrial fibre, and re-enter the water on the Red Sea side toward Asia. That crossing is one of the most concentrated pieces of internet infrastructure in the world.

Capacity versus resilience

New systems add raw capacity, but the more important effect is route diversity. When multiple cables share a single terrestrial crossing, a fault in that crossing affects all of them. Additional landing points and separated inland routes reduce the number of single points of failure.

What it means domestically

International capacity sets the ceiling for what Egyptian networks can deliver to global destinations, and it shapes the economics of hosting content and cloud infrastructure inside the country — a question examined in our look at Egypt's data centre build-out.

Domestically, the constraint remains the last mile. Abundant transit does nothing for a household whose local access is congested, which is why fixed and mobile access investment moves on a separate track from subsea capacity.
