2Africa's core build completes, adding another route through Egypt's corridor

The 2Africa consortium confirmed in November 2025 that the core infrastructure of its subsea cable system was complete. The system is one of the largest ever built, spanning roughly 45,000km and reaching dozens of landing countries around Africa, Europe and Asia.

For Egypt, the significance is structural rather than immediate. Every major Europe-to-Asia cable that transits the country must land on the Mediterranean coast, cross overland on terrestrial fibre, and re-enter the sea on the Red Sea side.

Route diversity, not just capacity

The value of an additional system is measured in independent paths as much as in terabits. Where several cables share the same terrestrial crossing, a single cut affects all of them simultaneously. Physically separated inland routes are what actually reduce that exposure.

What it changes for users

International capacity sets a ceiling, not a floor. A household with congested local access sees no benefit from added subsea capacity. The gains show up in latency and pricing for international traffic, and in the economics of hosting content inside Egypt rather than abroad.

The wider corridor

This completion follows the SEA-ME-WE-6 landings announced in July 2025, and both feed the same domestic question: whether Egypt captures value as a transit country or as a hosting destination. The data centre pipeline is where that question is being answered.

What to watch

Watch for announcements of additional Egyptian landing points, new terrestrial crossing routes, and any regulatory change in how international capacity is wholesaled.
