Central bank approves remote onboarding rules for a digital financial identity platform
The Central Bank of Egypt approved regulations in August 2026 for a platform allowing customers to be verified and onboarded without visiting a branch.

The Central Bank of Egypt approved regulations in August 2026 governing a Digital Financial Identity platform, enabling banks to verify customers and open accounts remotely through electronic know-your-customer processes.
The requirement being replaced is physical presence. Under existing practice, opening an account has generally meant attending a branch with documents. For customers far from a branch, in informal employment, or without the time to attend during working hours, that requirement has been decisive.
What eKYC actually involves
Remote onboarding typically combines document capture, a liveness check to confirm a real person is present, and verification against an authoritative identity record. The identity standard is not lowered; the channel changes.
Why a shared platform matters
If each bank builds its own verification stack, costs are duplicated and standards diverge. A central platform means one verification process recognised across institutions, which lowers the cost of onboarding a low-balance customer to the point where it is commercially worth doing.
The link to payments
Account access is the precondition for everything else in the digital payments stack. Instant payment usage in Egypt has grown steeply, as our reporting on InstaPay adoption sets out, but it only reaches people who hold an account in the first place.
What to watch
The measurable outcomes are the number of banks live on the platform, the share of new accounts opened remotely, and rejection rates. High rejection rates would indicate the verification standard is not workable for the population it is meant to reach.
